Shelton Police Chief Shawn Sequeira announced the arrest of Shelton resident David Munson, 76, on Tuesday, who was arrested on charges that include first-degree sexual assault and risk of injury to a minor following an investigation that was launched in October last year.

According to police, the arrest stems from the investigation, which was launched after the male complainant came to police to report that he was sexually assaulted while attending the Shelton Intermediate School from 2005 to 2007.

Police said that Munson was involved in a mentoring program at the school and was allegedly assigned to the student when he reportedly sexually assaulted him while on school grounds.

Munson retired from the Shelton Board of Education in 1999 following 34 years of teaching. At the time of the alleged incident, Munson was “acting in the capacity of a youth mentor and was also on the Board for the Shelton Youth Bureau when the minor came forward to police.

Following arraignment, Munson was released on $100,000 bond and is due back in Derby Superior Court on Wednesday to answer the charges.
